I love driving around looking at all the holiday lights with my friends, but driving can be stressful in Chicago! So when I don’t have the chance to sit in the car all cozy and warm over the holiday season, I love venturing out to Lincoln Park Zoo. (Especially since it’s free!)
For suburbanites: If you come in from Union Station, take the 151 cta bus. There will be a ton of stops (30 minute ride) but it’s nice because you can get a student discount and it’s about $2. If you don’t want to wait that long it’s like a 10 minute taxi ride, but it costs roughly $12 not including a tip.
By now in Chicago it gets dark around 5 p.m. and I highly recommend going at this time to beat some of the chill, plus the zoo closes at 8 p.m. But if you’re into braving the weather, definitely grab some peppermint hot cocoa from the zoo’s cafe. Either way, there’s a ton of cute photo ops including an Alice in Wonderland themed light show and a light maze!
I appreciated walking around the zoo and seeing all the lights they put up, especially since there’s 5 days until Christmas, it definitely put me in the holiday mood! I will miss spending Christmas in Chicago since I’ll be on vacation, but I feel like I got a tidbit of Christmas cheer to take with me on my trip. There’s something about all the snow and cold weather that I’m captivated by this time of year. Maybe it’s because I enjoyed playing in the snow as a kid or even watching snow fall from my window, but either way I love this weather!
I hope you are enjoying the winter weather wherever you are, and consider braving the cold to see these beautiful lights at Lincoln Park Zoo. Most of all, I hope you’re having a happy holiday!
